All Star I Family Conference 2008

Saturday, June 28, to Saturday, July 5, 2008.

Our speaker is working diligently on his morning orations. When he has them a little more fleshed out, we will post them here.

You will come back! You will come back!

MONDAY

Bernd will be introducing his unique perspective on natural study by talking about his, and his father's field experiences. Of particular interest will be Bernd's portrayal of "My father's escapades as one of the last Victorian-type naturalists".

Book: The Snoring Bird (Bernd's latest book)

TUESDAY

What does the social behavior of insects tell us about them, ourselves, and our world? Bernd will begin at his beginning, by revisiting his first book,"Bumblebee Economics", a revolutionary departure from traditional entomology.

Book: Bumblebee Economics

WEDNESDAY

Hear what Bernd and Edgar Allen Poe share in common; a deep interest in the raven. Long mythologized and attributed with mystical powers, the raven has also posed an enigma to naturalists. More than anyone else, Bernd has taken a long view on raven behavior and rearing, and discovered some fascinating and intriguing insights.

Book: Mind of the Raven

THURSDAY

Contrasting with the inscrutable raven, the goose has become a familiar visitor to many of us. Bernd will discuss the family dynamics, some rather familiar to humans, of this very accessible migratory fowl. Geese are easy to know, if you look at them. Bernd will show us how.

Book: The Geese of Beaver Bog

FRIDAY

For a brief time, leave the July heat and sun outside and enter the frozen mystery of the deep winter forest. Discover the mind-boggling ways different animals survive the winter. Bernd will introduce us to this hidden world. Survival!

Book: The Winter World
